Aircraft carriers in The Spanish Navy

Spain has operated aircraft carriers since the 1920s, initially with the seaplane tender SPS Dédalo (1922) and later the multi-role light carrier SPS Dédalo, which was formerly the US Navy's World War II light carrier USS Cabot.
The SPS Dédalo has been replaced as the navy's fleet flagship by the Principe de Asturias.

The second largest vessel of the Spanish Navy is the aircraft carrier,
Principe de Asturias (R11), which entered service in 1988 after completing sea trials.

Built in Spain it was designed with a "ski-jump" takeoff deck.
Its complement would be twenty nine AV-8 Harrier II vertical (or short) takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft or sixteen helicopters designed for antisubmarine warfare and support of marine landings.
