Aircraft carriers operated by
Brazilian Navy |
São Paulo is the flagship of the Brazilian Navy. It replaced the World War II-era carrier Minas Gerais,
which was in commission for over 40 years.
HMS Vengeance started as a Colossus-class carrier built by the United Kingdom during World War II.
She was purchased by Brazil in 1956 for USD $9 million, and named after Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek's
home state of
Minas Gerais.
Minas Gerais was decommissioned 16 October 2001 The São Paulo is newer, bigger, faster and has greater operational capacity than its predecessor.
Since 2005, the São Paulo is undergoing an extensive modernization program.
The upgrades are scheduled to complete in July 2009,
and the São Paulo is due to be fully operational by October 2009 |
